  3. Ramesh
Cataract · Mumbai

For Ramesh, being able to see clearly meant being able to work, earn and live independently again.

Ramesh had gradually found everyday life becoming harder as his vision deteriorated. Work became difficult, simple tasks took more effort, and the uncertainty of not knowing how or where to get treatment only added to the problem.

When losing your sight starts affecting more than your vision

For Ramesh, the problem was not simply that he could not see as clearly as before. His declining vision was beginning to affect the things that allowed him to manage his everyday life. Work was becoming harder, independence was becoming more difficult to maintain, and getting the right treatment did not feel straightforward.

For someone who depends on their ability to work, a problem with their eyesight can quickly become a problem with much more. The ability to earn, move around confidently and take care of everyday responsibilities can all begin to feel uncertain.

The first step was finding a way to the right care.

Ramesh was connected to GVF through its wider network, opening a path towards the assessment and treatment he needed. GVF works with doctors, hospitals, NGOs and other organisations to help eligible patients access appropriate eye care without having to navigate the entire process alone.

His journey began with understanding what was affecting his vision and what treatment would be appropriate. From there, the focus was on making the necessary care accessible and helping him move through the treatment journey.

  1. Getting his sight back meant getting back to work.

The impact of treatment went beyond being able to see more clearly. For Ramesh, better vision meant being able to return to parts of everyday life that had become increasingly difficult. He could begin thinking about work again, move through his day with greater independence and look beyond the immediate problem of his eyesight.

One treatment. A much bigger difference to everyday life.

  2. A patient’s journey doesn’t begin with surgery, and it doesn’t end there either.

Stories like Ramesh’s are one part of the wider work GVF has been doing since 2002. Across its work, GVF has supported 3,443 unique patients through 4,091 recorded episodes of care, with support extending across diagnosis, treatment and essential care.

Every number represents someone who had a different condition, a different circumstance and a different reason for needing help.

Help make the next one possible.

Ramesh’s story is one person’s experience of what access to eye care can mean. There are many more people who may need help reaching the diagnosis, treatment and essential care that can change what comes next for them.
